Aliens Cut Racism By Half

Outlined in her book, The Authoritarian Dynamic, Psychologist, Karen Stenner designed a double blind study to find out how various people tolerate those who looked or thought differently from them in society. To perform the study, well trained student interviewers were randomly assigned to visit homes of the "white" people previously assessed as the most extreme "libertarians” and "authoritarians". The purpose of this was to see how the two groups differ in various aspects of "difference tolerance".

Stenner describes "authoritarians" as those who are strict with obedience and conformity. They often want others to be the same as them and are prone to support coercion to get people to "fall in line". "Libertarians" she sees as people who prize diversity, and who are often energized and excited to spend time getting to know people who are different and who have different views, even if they don't always agree.

For the study, some of the student interviewers were African American, and others white. During recorded interviews at the homes of subjects, the interviewers asked broad and open ended questions provided by Stenner. Audio recordings and observation logs were analysed following the interviews.

According to Stenner, the crucial distinction between her "libertarians" and "authoritarians", is that during the interviews, libertarians were generally excited and engaged when talking about political differences, theories around dealing with crime, and were generally comfortable fully engaging with interviewers who were black or brown. Whereas authoritarians were often nervous and frightened by people of color, and were less ready to give their time to them. Further, they became more "unhinged" by exploring people's differences. She adds that authoritarians tend to highly value "oneness" or "sameness" from the standpoint of belonging to a "tribal-like" group--us vs. them.

With the knowledge of libertarian and authoritarian households in hand from the previous experiment, an entirely separate study was done. This one was meant to manipulate the way authoritarians perceive "us" and "them." Interviewers again go to the houses of "white people" and are told that NASA had verified the existence of alien life. They were told that the beings look "very different from us in ways we are not yet even able to imagine."

That simple statement of widescale difference in appearance produced some fascinating results. The previously measured racial intolerance of authoritarian subjects decreased by half. According to Stenner, this suggested that their intolerance was not so much about or against a certain racial group, but simply intolerance against "otherness". The authoritarians not only became kinder to black people, they also became more lenient on criminals--suggesting perhaps a buildup of acceptance and understanding.

Stenner's study suggests that we become more tolerable the more we realize how similar we are, not the more we think about everyone's differences. Now think of the means by which our culture is trying to control speech, views, and actions towards people of color, different cultures, different sexual orientations etc.

Does forcing views and tolerance on people work? According to this study, no. Instead, focusing on where we are similar works best to create more unity. Then, our differences become ways in which the human experience is enriched, as opposed to our differences becoming an obsession everyone MUST acknowledge.

The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique

The 4-7-8 breathing technique is a style of intentional breathwork that can calm your mind and body. Though popularized in 2015 by integrative medicine specialist Andrew Weil, MD, it has ancient roots in the yogic practice of pranayama, or focusing on the breath:

  1. Inhale through your nose for four counts.
  2. Hold your breath for seven counts.
  3. Exhale through your mouth for eight counts.

Calm your mind - The repetitive nature of 4-7-8 breathing provides a calming distraction to your racing mind. "The counting sequence is a way to focus your mind on something other than your worries," Dr. Young says.

Reduce stress and anxiety - Your sympathetic nervous system is responsible for your body's "fight-or-flight" response. When you're stressed, this system goes into overdrive, which makes you feel amped-up — like a fast-beating heart, shallow breathing and other telltale signs of stress, like sweaty hands and an upset stomach. Your parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for relaxing your sympathetic nervous system and helping you calm down. "Breathing techniques like 4-7-8 breathing can play a huge role in activating your parasympathetic nervous system and helping you to shift back toward tranquility," Dr. Young says.

Help you sleep - Forget counting sheep and skip right to counting your breath. Calming your mind and reducing your anxiety can go a long way toward a good night's sleep, and 4-7-8 breathing is associated with both. It's also been shown to decrease heart rate and blood pressure, which put your body in the right state for sleep.

Train your body to better respond to stress - They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but with practice and repetition, you can teach your nervous system to do some pretty cool things.

"It takes some time for the nervous system to respond to this type of breathwork," Dr. Young says. "The more we do it, the more we allow our bodies to go into that parasympathetic mode." If you regularly practice 4-7-8 breathing (especially during times when you're not particularly stressed), your body will actually learn to incorporate it into your go-to stress response.

Quantum Healing vs. Reiki

1. A Reiki practitioner seeks to transfer healing to a client from a supernatural power through touch therapy where the healing energy reaches the body from the universe. In quantum healing, however, the therapy involves creating energy balance within the body to heal injured parts by removing accumulated energy. Quantum healing can also involve objects with an energy charge, such as a quantum drinking bottle or a quantum bloc.

2. A Reiki practitioner acquires healing energy from another practitioner by "attunement," while a quantum healer acquires the healing power through practice and meditation.

3. In Reiki healing, positive energy flows from the universe through a practitioner's hands to different body parts, while in quantum, energy flows from one body part to another. During the transfer, an energy balance is created that causes healing to injured parts.

4. Reiki healing takes place on three levels (levels 1,2 and 3), each offering a complete healing process, while quantum healing occurs on one level.

5. Reiki healing is more ritualistic as it depends on healing from a supernatural power, while quantum healing is not ritualistic but rather meditational.

6. Reiki is passive, and the client is not actively involved in energy transfer, while quantum therapy is active and requires the client to meditate to receive healing.
